Thieves smashed into a jewellers on New Bond Street early this morning in an attempt to steal watches worth thousands of pounds.

The shop, Jura Watches, which stocks a selection of goods including limited collections by Porsche and Lacroix, was hit in an apparent “smash and grab” raid at midnight.

Police said watches worth thousands of pounds were taken in the raid, in which a glass door was smashed, and they were looking for four suspects.

Earlier this year a moped gang behind more than 70 raids in on jewellers in the West End were arrested by police.

The group had targeted shops in New Bond Street, Oxford Street and Knightsbridge.

WHY should jewellers be protected by the police?

What few police there are at street level cannot even ensure the safety of citizens.

How about using some shutters? Or would that not fit in with the character of the area?

Its not that the Metropolitan police are ineffective, its that London's criminals perceive them as being increasingly ineffective, particularly as the government keeps claiming that more police are involved in 'front line' activity but this disguises the fact that much of this activity is 'front line' related form filling. So in fact a decreasing number of police are actually involved in substantive physical presence crime prevention. Simple.

It is very amazing and daring that moped gang behind more then 70 raids in jewelers in West End.It mean there are lot of groups roaming in London the disturb peaceful life.
Amazing groups are targeting in most busy streets in London and there is no police to check them. Whereas, all the times police is roaming the street to protect the peoples.
