London Games to be child's play by Christmas

21 Jul 2009

The first official London 2012 toys will be ready by Christmas and will be created by toy firm Hornby, London's Olympics organisers announced today.

A special Scalextric velodrome set, Corgi die-cast model vehicles - including London buses and taxis, Hornby models of the trains used for the 2012 Games and Airfix kits of the main London 2012 venues - including the Olympic Stadium, will go on sale.

Hornby Plc has been awarded a three-year licence to develop and market the range of products which will all feature the London 2012 branding.

London 2012 chief executive Paul Deighton said: "We are proud to be working with a truly iconic British company, which can offer us a great range of products across its brands that will celebrate the Games in 2012 and live on for generations after as collector's items.

"We welcome Hornby - and Corgi, Scalextric and Airfix - to the London 2012 family."

Hornby chief executive Frank Martin said the company was "delighted to have been granted such a broadly based licence".

He said: "This is a great honour for Hornby and an important development for the group.

"We have an excellent portfolio of iconic brands and products that are a superb fit with London 2012.

"We have some very exciting plans that we are developing with (organising committee) LOCOG to create official merchandise that will demonstrate the very best of London and the Games."

This is the first of several toy and souvenir licences to be awarded by London 2012.
