Opponent dares to use America's dreaded S-word

Barack Obama faced the ultimate insult from his Republican rivals when they accused him of bringing 'socialism' to America

The battle between Mr Obama and critics over his health care plan exploded into a bitter slanging match. While the president accused Republicans of putting politics ahead of policy, they said he was intent on bringing socialism to the US.

Republican chairman Michael Steele used the feared S-word when he accused Mr Obama of jeopardising America's future with his plan to bring health care to almost 50 million uninsured Americans. He said the proposal to offer a government-run health scheme constituted "socialism".

Mr Obama wants Congress to approve the $1trillion plan before the summer recess.

Mr Steele believes the president is trying to rush through his plans without much thought to the consequences. "If we screw this up, it could last a generation," said Mr Steele. "All of us should be scared to death. So slow down, Mr President."

Mr Obama hit back, saying: "We've talked this problem to death - year after year. Unless we act now, nothing will change. The need for reform is urgent and indisputable."
