Hackers steal thousands from Stagg bank account

Thieves have hacked into Colin Stagg's computer and plundered his bank account.

The 45-year-old, who was falsely accused of killing Rachel Nickell in 1992, lost thousands of pounds before bank officials noticed the suspicious transactions and cancelled his card.

Mr Stagg, from Roehampton, won £700,000 in compensation last year for wrongful arrest and prosecution in the Nickell case, was on holiday. He said: "The first I knew something was wrong was when a supermarket in Cornwall refused the card.

"I thought it was just a banking error. But when I checked they told me I had been robbed. There had been a lot of transactions at Thorpe Park amusement centre over the past month and they got suspicious. They have refunded the missing money. I have always been very careful with personal data. But a couple of months back, during a security check of my computer, the anti-hacker programme found a couple of Trojan Horse viruses. They were destroyed but someone tried again. I suppose coming into a lot of money made me a target."

Miss Nickell, a 23-year-old model, was stabbed 49 times and sexually assaulted in front of her two-year-old son Alex on Wimbledon Common. Mr Stagg was acquitted after a disastrous police investigation.

Last December schizophrenic Robert Napper, 42, pleaded guilty to killing Miss Nickell.
