Second sister dies from injuries after 'arson attack'

A woman has died following a suspected arson attack at her family home a month ago that killed her 15-year-old sister.

Nabiha Masud, 21, died in hospital on Saturday, less than 24 hours after hundreds of friends and relatives attended her sister Maleha's funeral.

The sisters were both injured in the fire that allegedly started when petrol was poured through the letter box at their home in Tooting.

Their brother Junaid, 16, is still in a critical condition. Older brother Zain, 22, a City banker, was discharged from hospital to attend his sister's funeral along with their mother Rubina, 53.

Mrs Masud, who lost her husband to cancer in 2007, wept and was comforted by family members during the service at the Balham mosque on Friday. Also present was Helen Dorfman, the headteacher of Burntwood School in Tooting where Maleha would have taken her GCSEs next year.

Habib Lattif, who taught Maleha and Nabiha, said: "It is very painful for the community. The girls were very nice, very polite, very obedient and respectful. They were good students, very friendly and very hard working."

Police believe there are still people who have information about the arson but have not come forward. Speaking outside the Masuds' home, Detective Chief Inspector Damian Allain said: "We are still appealing for people who were in the area of Lessingham Avenue between 2am and 5am on Sunday 21 June. If people are frightened there are special measures that can be employed to protect them if necessary."

Tooting MP Sadiq Khan, who attended the funeral, said: "One of the theories is it is gang related and one of the people who did it may be in a gang. Put yourself in the shoes of Mrs Masud, who has lost her 15-year-old daughter. The family cannot return to the house, it is full of grief for them."

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with murder and will appear at the Old Bailey on 17 September.

Anyone with information should call the incident room on 020 8721 4205 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
