Spotify applies to launch on iPhone

Spotify, the hugely popular online music service, is to take on Apple with a mobile phone version of its software.

Described as an "iTunes killer", Spotify allows people to hear music online free if they listen to adverts.

Spotify today said it had asked Apple to approve the software for the iPhone and hoped it would be available "within weeks". It is expected to be available as a £9.99 per month subscription service. Users will be able to listen to music live online or download songs and playlists to their iPhone.

Spotify admitted Apple could hold up the application if it sees the service as a competitor.
