Former Met detective charged over drug seizure

28 Jul 2009

A former Metropolitan Police officer was arrested and charged today in connection with one of Ireland's largest drug seizures, police said.

Ex-Detective Sergeant Michael Daly, 49, of no fixed abode, was charged with conspiracy to supply 1,554 kilos of cocaine.

The drugs haul, which had an estimated street value of 400 million euro (£345.4m), was seized off the coast of Dunlough Bay, Cork, Ireland in July 2007.

Daly was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Blackfriars Crown Court or the Old Bailey on August 7.

Two other men have also been charged in connection with the seizure.

John Gary Edney, 57, from East Hill, South Darenth, Kent, and Alan Roger Wells, 55, from Blenheim Road, Sidcup, Kent, were arrested and charged on July 23.

Both men appeared at Highbury Magistrates' Court on Friday and were remanded in custody to appear at Blackfriars Crown Court or the Old Bailey on August 11.
