Strangled by her father and uncle for affair

Banaz Mahmod was killed after falling in love with a man her family did not want her to marry.

The 20-year-old, who had left an arranged and unhappy marriage and started a relationship with Rhamat Sulemani against the wishes of her parents, was strangled with a bootlace at her home in Surrey.

Her body was discovered in a suitcase four months later, buried beneath the foundations of a house in Birmingham.

Her father Mahmod Mahmod, 52, and uncle Ari Mahmod, 50, from Mitcham, south London, were convicted of the murder.

A court heard how the pair decided she must pay "the ultimate price" for bringing shame on them.

Speaking at the trial, Mr Sulemani, 29, said Banaz was threatened and attacked before her murder.

She made a series of complaints to police in the lead-up to her death, and had agreed to press charges the day before she was killed, following a kidnap attempt.

She had recorded a message on Mr Sulemani's mobile phone from a hospital bed saying how fearful she was that her father and uncle would try to kill her.

The court heard that the two relatives recruited young Kurdish men to carry out the murder.

They believed the family's standing was at stake unless they acted according to the old customs.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission investigated how the Met and West Midlands Police dealt with Ms Mahmod and six detectives received written warnings.
