Gatwick Airport gunman Tasered

A man was shot with a Taser gun by police at Gatwick Airport early today after he was spotted carrying a handgun.

The man, in his forties, boarded a bus from Crawley, West Sussex, to the airport shortly after 2am and a passenger raised the alarm after seeing the weapon.

The man, from the Crawley area, went into the arrivals area in the South Terminal where he was surrounded by armed police on routine patrol. They used the stun gun to disable him. He was arrested and taken into custody at Crawley where he is awaiting questioning.

Detectives do not believe the incident was an attempted act of terrorism. "Such incidents are rare and the speed in which it was resolved meant no one at the airport was harmed," a Sussex Police spokesman said.
