A baby who was cut from her mother's womb has been found alive.

The girl, whose mother's body was discovered this week in a cupboard in her flat, appeared to be in "fairly good health" at a New Hampshire hospital, police said.

Police have arrested two people in connection with the death of the baby's mother, Darlene Haynes, 23. Julie Corey, 35, and a man were found with the child in Plymouth, New Hampshire.

Police said Corey told friends she had given birth at a Massachusetts hospital and appeared with a newborn girl last Friday.

Ms Haynes, of Worcester, Massachusetts, was eight months pregnant and planned to name her child Sheila Marie, according to her family.

Her landlord, William Thompson, found her body. He said he was investigating reports of a "horrifying smell" in her flat, where he saw her body wrapped in bedding. "There's no words to describe what's going on in this building," he said.

Ms Haynes had taken her one-year-old daughter Christina to her boyfriend Roberto Rodriguez's home last Thursday and relatives are taking care of her. She had two other children, Jasmine, four, and Lilliana, three, who live with her grandmother.

Mr Rodriguez, 24, said: "I can't sleep, I can't eat, I can't think."

Police said Ms Haynes had been dead for days and that she had not contacted family or friends since last Thursday. Her baby was not noticed to be missing until an autopsy on Tuesday. Police are treating her death as murder.

Toxicology tests should establish the cause of death but Worcester detective Edward McGinn said the autopsy indicated Ms Haynes suffered head injuries.
