Vandals hit Marble Arch fountains

Katharine Barney, City Hall Reporter

The fountains at Marble Arch have been vandalised weeks after a £2.1million makeover.

The 181-year-old monument's fountains were working for the first time in a decade and were illuminated in red, white and blue.

But litter has been stuffed down the jets, meaning engineers have had to be called to repair them next week.

Robert Davis, Westminster council's deputy leader, said: "The restoration of the Marble Arch fountains has been very popular and we will not allow this mindless act of vandalism to ruin this iconic site for local residents and visitors. Repairs are being carried out as a priority."

I agree with Phil Jones, Marble Arch is now a disaster zone for car drivers having to dodge idiotic pedestrians who before were kept well away from the road by having an underpass system. This 'makeover' is another reason why our former Mayor was a complete disaster for this city.

- Kimberley, London

The Marble Arch area, particularly the underpasses has been an eyesore for years with no-one, including the police, taking any notice. This prominent makeover can only have been seen as a challenge to those whose only aim in life seems to be to cause trouble and damage. The authorities should have been prepared for this attack and got some security in place for the period until the attention of anti-social elements was eventually draw elsewhere.

- Peter Haldane, London

Marble Arch was nicer before 'the makeover'. A big waste of money. It used to be much safer getting across the busy road system.

There is so much vermin in London.

why don't they simply cover any vulnerable fittings with appropriately-fitted hard wire mesh? Problem solved.
