Barack Obama as the Joker
Cruel image: the montage which first appeared in Los Angeles has been seized upon by the President’s Right-wing critics

‘Joker’ poster delights Barack Obama’s critics

Paul Thomson in Miami
04.08.09

A poster showing Barack Obama as the Heath Ledger Joker character is causing a stir in the US.

The striking montage of the President with white face paint and smudged red lipstick has the word “socialism” beneath it — a huge insult for an American president.

Dozens of the posters have been spotted around Los Angeles and have begun to appear in other cities, including Atlanta on the eastern coast, after being featured in the US media.

The website that first featured the poster crashed yesterday because so many people were trying to view the image.

No one has claimed credit for the posters, but conservatives seized on the image with glee.

Right-wing commentator Thomas Lifson wrote on the American Thinker website: “It is starting. Open mockery of Barack Obama, as disillusionment sets in with the man, his policies, and the phony image of a race-healing, brilliant, scholarly, middle-of-the-roader.”

Supporters of Mr Obama called the posters “mean-spirited and dangerous”.

Earl Ofari from the Los Angeles urban policy unit said: “Depicting the president as demonic and a socialist goes beyond political spoofery.”

Heath Ledger
Inspiration: actor Heath Ledger made up as the Joker
The posters have appeared as Mr Obama faces a growing number of negative comments as he attempts to force through his $1 trillion health care programme.

The dreaded “socialism” word was first levelled at him two weeks ago by Republican chairman Michael Steele. He said the President's attempt to pressure Congress into passing his health care reforms amounted to socialism. In the US there is currently no greater insult for a President than to be accused of adopting socialist policies.

Posters springing up all over Dumbarton and the surounding areas such as Glasgow etc, although the posters we have seen have a web address named infowars.com and new world order aka (NWO).....?

- John 'O Neighbour - Tit, Dumbarton, UK

Any person that thinks a massive new cigarette tax, Cap & Trade and Obama's proposed nationalized health care system isn't a tax on the middle class are in a severe state of denial.

The British health system is a nightmare. Canadians by the thousands go south to the USA to get medical treatment they can't get in Canada.

Enter "Medical Tourism" into your search engine.

The USA needs to reform its heath care system, but government should not be allowed to be the health care provider. Government dominated health care is a disaster.

Obama's "Cash for Clunkers" is a disaster. Obama is a disaster for the USA and now many who voted for him are experiencing "buyer's regret."

- Hostile Knowlege, Houston, USA

I am thrilled with Obama so far. I'm glad I voted for him. I think most all of his supporters remain supporters. And many of his opponents have become supporters. It's because he is the only hope America has of avoiding the descent into total red-faced, screaming hillbillies.

- Janna, Greenville, NC

Sometimes the truth hurts. There is a saying....what you do speaks so loud.....I cannot hear what you say. He says he is not a socialist but........he sure acts like one.

- Cindy, California, Upland, USA

"I have a theory on the latter - the Left (or even Centrists) are less vitrolic and seem to be able to hold calm discussion."

You do realize you can get in trouble for smoking that stuff you use, don't you? For you to consider Obama to be nothing more than left leaning centrist you have to be waaaaaaaay over to the left yourself. Relative perspective or not, your comment is a joke.

(Not a single splash of foaming saliva hit my computer screen while saying the above, btw)

- Rogan, Irving

What a desperate bunch of loons you all are.

- Vic Gibbons, Brussels, Belgium

"He's been responsible for lowering taxes for most Americans. He's trying to stop insurance companies from ripping off the public. What more do you people want?
- Nigel, Tulsa, USA"

How about, 'reality'.

- Rogan, Irving

1) Calling Obama a socialist is frankly laughable. Inches to the left of the centre ground is definitely not socialist.
2) There are no truly socialist countries in Europe. And in contrast to what people are writing here Britain is certainly not.
3) Why are the evening standard reader comment sections(or indeed 90% of internet forums) dominated by right wingers?

I have a theory on the latter - the Left (or even Centrists) are less vitrolic and seem to be able to hold calm discussion.

The Right meanwhile seem obsessed with spamming forums, harking to rose-tinted "good old days" which never existed, and are particularly good at writing letters of complaint about petty issues like someone swearing on a pre-watershed TV show, or just generally shouting people down with offensive remarks.

- Kh, London, UK

Vanity Fair magazine published a similar picture of GW Bush last year. It is time that the Republicans grow a set and play by the same rules that the Dems have established.

- Richard, Dubuque, Iowa USA

well they finally got his picture right. i knew he was a joke from the start he fooled alot of people into voting for him i hope they are still happy. this man is bad for this country i swear some people are like sheep

- Joe, az

Eric Wayne Henery is absolutely correct, we screwed up our own country by following our country bumpkin redneck cousins into a false war (which is incidentally why it was supported, because of made up WMD's not because everyone adored Bush). Although when he references Great Britton, does he mean Fern or Tony?

- Bob, Cheam

Where was all the outrage when the same poster was made of George Bush?
I'm so sick of hearing what "Obama inherited". He applied for the job and got it. Just because he is so damn stupid , that he didn't understand economics and foreign policy, doesn't give him the privilege of blaming the guy that sat in the chair before him. Perhaps he should have been preparing for the job, instead of campaigning all over the world wanting to be King. That immaturity comes from never having run anything, never having been an executive of any sorts, being totally inept and unprepared - and having your whole career handed to you to fill the affirmative action requirements.

He got the job he wanted. Now shut up and do what you promised, Obama.

- Ann, Des Moines, IA

This president has made a series of decisions that have distracted the U.S. from focusing on creating new jobs and jump-starting the economy. Bush didn't say let's sign-in a $787 billion dollar pork bill, Bush didn't say let's ram Universal Health Care, ram Cap and Trade, escalate the nation's budget to over a trillion and don't forget the 44 "government czars" who have NO congressional oversight. You just can't blame Bush anymore.

What was bad, Mr. President, you chose to make worse.

- Pjean, Apple Valley, USA

"Mean-spirited and dangerous"? An American leftist magazine, Vanity Fair, published a similar picture of George W. Bush as the Joker in their Aug. '08 edition. No one on the left thought that was "mean-spirited and dangerous". The right in America is not nearly as mean, cunning, deceitful and hate-filled as the left is. The left is constantly filled with rage, demanding still that Geo. W. Bush be "tried" even though he had the full support of congress and the will of the people on his side. "Unread Lips" by IBD, is a great article on how Obama deceived the people with his campaign rhetoric. Hopefully, the screw is turning!

- Deane, Highland, Ca, USA

In rebuttal to Keith Grey from Islington, UK, please read YOUR fellow countrymen's comments below your comments. I think that should answer your question.

As far as the "Joker" picture of Obama, I think that it accurately portrays what I think of him & his administration. If you look at his approval rating as president, it is quickly declining. While I can not speak for all the American voters, it leads me to believe that many of the people that voted for him is feeling the same way.

I think the only people that should be upset by this is the current administration. It shows them that not all of us are as stupid & mindless as they would like for us to be. And that someone has seen through their shiny veneer to see the the current administration is really a "Bigtop Circus" & the President is the head clown.

- Bwpii, ATLANTA, USA

The caption should read
Organized
Socialism

- Lowell Johnson, Dunnelon FL

Just keep in mind the words of Thomas Jefferson... "A government big enough to give you everything you want is also big enough to take everything you have."

- Don, Atascadero, CA

Remember what Alfred the butler said about the Joker in "The Dark Knight"?
"Some men just like to watch the world burn."
President Obama is a left-wing idealogue who is trying to run a essentially conservative nation. That is what the Obama administration feels like; every day he lights a new match.

- Lynda, Bath, Ohio

James, Ridgecrest, CA

Is it coz he is black.

- David, London

Anybody see the clip of Obama speaking to AARP? All he wants to do, he says is provide patients and doctors with the information they need to choose the right treatments. ??? I don't know about you, but I trust my doctor's and the medical community's ability to access info a whole lot more than those folks who run the post office, manage medical payouts, etc. Not to mention the fact that once you become an official provider of "information", quality assurance procedures lead you to make sure that "information" is being used, and used according to the providers guidelines. He tried to sound benign, helpful and caring, but was it ever transparent and scary!!

- Carol Hemwall, R.N., Atascadero, CA

This has to be one of the worst presidents in history who has made it clear he hates the United States and wants to destroy it. He's succeeding brillantly.

- Sheryl Meyer, Newport Beach, U.S.A.

The poster is for all of the people that fell for the pitch. The jokes on you. That just shows you what 250 million in campaign contributions can do for you when you can get millions of the poor parasites that never vote to turn out in large numbers and convince the socially responsible intellectuals in this country that you are a moderate and all is going to be well and good. Now the government has complete authority to suck trillions more of our tax dollars out of a once productive economy along with our big financal institutions who bought the rest of them. Like Margaret Thatcher once said "Socialism only works until you run out of other peoples money". With a 10 trillion national debt in a 11 trillion economy the big secret is that they already have, they just haven't told you yet. Bush did a horrible job in 8 years. It only took Obama 6 months to increase the deficit 4 fold while still trying to pile on more. Good luck with that strategy. We are going to cut costs with a government healthcare program? Maybe they can use the US Postal Service as a model to increase efficiency in your healthcare. Similar to cutting mail delivery days. We can save money by only letting you see a doctor on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. What I want to know is are all the federal employees and the Congress going to have the same plan? Not a chance in hell. They will leave the horrible government run plan to the unsuspecting masses.

- Tim, Michigan

He needs to get used to it. His predecessor was called a war criminal and a nazi for years. This stuff is tame compared to that, and Obama's worshippers will have to live with it until they manage to repeal the First Amendment for speech that they don't like.

- Lazlototh, New York US

So the Obama supports are upset over this image. Too bad! Let's review eight years of demonizing Bush as a chimp, as Hitler. Let's remember posters of Bush hanging from a rope, with a gun to his head, as a vampire, and on and on. I have NO sympathy for the Obots. Get used to it, guys, it's going to get much, much worse.

- Scott, San Francisco USA

I am always amused by European's abject love of socialism. The Socialist societies of Europe can only exist because those crazy Americans are there to provide the protection the Europeans need so their governments can be involved in their bowl movements and housing, much like children depend upon their parents. With America turning into a Socialist nation, the Europeans will have to depend upon China to provide their protection. Good luck with that.

- Arnold Becker, Los Angeles, CA USA

That was a fabulous example of freedom speech (on the other side of the coin for a change). There have been millions of parodies similar to that about republicans and our republican leaders in the past, not just George W. - it's about time someone had the guts to put it out there about obama, his campaign and their desire for socialism (although they don't use that word - they just want the policies). Truth hurts

- Dawn, Panama City, USA

You Socialist Limeys screwed up your country, We do not want to follow in your stupidity. Mind your own ONCE Great Britton!

- Eric Wayne Henery, Duncannon, USA

Obama is worse than a socialist. He is a wannabe Fascist with the government either owning or controlling everything in the economy while it destroys capitalism in the process. He will be everyones nightmare if he succeeds which he can do as at least forty percent of America's population is now mostly parasites or brainwashed by public education propaganda. Thanks Jack

- Jack, New Orleans USA

Unfortunately the joke is on the American people.

- David, Red Bluff, Ca USA

"In my opinion, without socialism we would not have universal healthcare, social housing that benefits all."

Ah and exactly where does personal responsibility come into play in your universe? In other words why should others have to pay for someone else's housing and medical care? Many believe that if you want a house and medical care work for and pay for it.

- Fenoy, MD, USA

The economy went down the toilet with Bush in office. The Dow Jones Industrial average just had it's best July in history, and the S&P 500 broke 1,000 points yesterday. How can anyone argue that Obama is having a negative effect on our economic situation?
He's been responsible for lowering taxes for most Americans. He's trying to stop insurance companies from ripping off the public. What more do you people want?

- Nigel, Tulsa, USA

Socialism has a bad name in America because it doesn't work. Capitalism delivers the goods and services, socialism doesn't. It is astounding to read Europeans crow about the success of socialism when there were entire decades when the European economy did not add one new net job. And of course, the welfare states of Europe can exist only because America lifts your defense burden from you.

While a life of serfdom may be familiar and comfortable to Europeans it is distinctly alien and uncomfortable to Americans, who are fond of our freedom and independence from government. The idea of a socialist government meddling in our lives and even picking our doctors for us is hateful. It will never be accepted by Americans.

- Steve Gregg, Washington, DC

Keith Grey, we are a country founded by people who consciously left Europe to live free of government interference and that sentiment is in our DNA. We know that politicians are usually weasels who care only about their own selfish interests, and we know they have arranged it so they will not live under the odious plan they have in mind for the rest of us. They have rigged it so that even if they only serve one term in the House of Representatives, they are entitled to excellent health care which most Americans enjoy right now, for the rest of their lives. The rest of us can eat cake. Our present system can be adminstratively messy and frustrating, but overall the care is wonderful.

- Jeannine G., Chicago

“Mean-spirited and Dangerous”? Please. The left reveled in bashing Bush for eight years. Bush/Hitler posters were all over the place. What a pathetic b bunch of thin-skinned crybabies.

- Funkanster Chris, NYC, USA

Socialism requires governmental control and intrusion at every level of its unfortunate subjects' lives in order to function. It has only ever created greater equality by dragging al but the wealthy and powerful down to the level of the lowest common denominator. Socialism in its purest form is communism, oppressive and undemoctratic. To see this in action, take a look at the direction in which the EUropean Union is moving. It becomes more oppressive and less democrtatic every day.
Middle America is only just waking up to the nightmare that they have created for themselves by voting for Obama.

- Keith Lonsdale, Doncaster

There are many who say that the Obama cartoon is disrespectful. So be it. His presidency is disrespectful.

- James, Ridgecrest, CA

Why would Obama feel offended to the use of the word Socialism? I thought he was an admirer of Lenin.

- Tony, Dunstable, UK

This socialism that Obama is pushing is his teleprompter's fault. We all know that he can't speak without it.

If their numbers are correct, they will want to give health insurance to another 50,000,000 people including illegal immigrants. How do we do this with the same amount of doctors, nurses, and hospitals that we have now. The way that it will be done is by increasing taxes on a majority of Americans and rationing healthcare. Educate yourself and find out how horrible the healthcare is in Canada and England. People will die with his plan.

The takeover of the auto industry, the takeover of banks, the controlling of companies through cap and trade. Now the takeover of healthcare.

If that isn't socialism, what is?

WAKE UP AMERICA BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE

- M Reith, Melville, USA

Now you see the real man. The one who hates the USA. The government owns GM and Chrysler. They want to run health care just like they run junkers for cash. Just like they are running the bail out programs. He told everyone what he would do in his book. No one bothered to read it or did not take him seriously. Put two words together? Pray his teleprompter doesn't break down. Can I sound like and idiot when it breaks down? YES I CAN!

- John Morrison, United States

Too many speeches without answers = where's the beef? I've been saying it since this guy took office - he's a one-termer, period.

- Ted, London

Call it "buyer's remorse". Elections have consequences and we are already paying dearly after only 6 months. About half of the country didn't vote for this putz so it's only natural they'll express displeasure at his lousy policies (just giving the democrats a taste of their own medicine). The higher the rise the harder they'll fall and it will be fun watching this clown get torn apart by the media, etc. Pass the popcorn, please!

- Al, Washington, DC

The "original " joker Jack Nicholson wore a purple Tommy Nutter suit in the film. Surely this must been the inspriration.

- Jack Spratt, Richmond, Surrey

I am always amused by America's abject fear of the term socialism. It appears to be linked to communism in the American psyche. If am interested in understanding this adverse reaction in American politics - can some enlighten me.
In Europe, socialism is seen as a lot more positive ideology (open to argument from some), indeed we have socialist governments, social conservatives and conservative socialists. In my opinion, without socialism we would not have universal healthcare, social housing that benefits all.
The poster - powerful image - to be expected at some point and will lead to healthy debate as to the policies and effectiveness of the new administration

- Keith Grey, islington, UK

Perhaps American conservatives should stop for a moment to consider if it hadn't been for Obama, the loathesome Clintons would probably be back in the White House.

But this is nothing out of the ordinary. Look at the abuse Bush used to get.

- Kevin T, Beckenham, Kent

Anyone care to add any serious comments now?

- Vic Gibbons, Brussels, Belgium

yeah Bob...the country is going down fast and our kids are going to pay dearly for it but at least he can put a sentence together...well that makes us all feel better!

- Car256@Verizon.Net, mass

Six months in and every right wing idiot blames President Obama for the fall of the United States. Inheriting the Bush Administration's mess will take more than six months to fix...oops, I forgot, talking bad about the former President is unpatriotic.

- Kevin Henderson, Hamilton, Ohio, United States

Get over it already. Obama critics want the mess the Bush Administration created, fixed in six months...oops, I'm sorry, it's considered unpatriotic when you talk bad about former President Bush. And why is Cap from London even speaking on American Politics? Hmmmm...

- Kevin Henderson, Hamilton, Ohio, United States

A lot of Americans knew this joker was bad news well before last year's election. Tony Blair comes off like a saint in comparison!

- Kpnunn, Virginia City USA

Why so serious? He can't be any worse than Bush, he's able to string a coherent sentence together which is obviously better.

- Bob, Cheam

Well America you voted him in, welcome to Socialism, it will cost you dearly.

- P Staker, London

The adoring Americans who voted Obama into office will be sorry.

The parallels between Obama and our very own Tony Bliar are strikingly similar.

....and we all know the aftermath of that mistake !

- Cap, london
