Bargain hunters camped out for 72 hours to get their hands on £10 flights to Australia.

Would-be travellers set up outside the offices of STA Travel in Victoria on Sunday — three days before the promotion began today — to be first in line to snap up the cheapest one-way airfare to Australia for almost 60 years.

The 150 tickets in the “£10 Pom” promotion went on sale at 8am today at eight STA branches across Britain.

The promotion celebrating the travel agent's 30th anniversary was open to anyone aged between 18 and 30 with a 12-month working holiday visa.

The bargain echoes the thousands of Brits who migrated en masse to Australia by boat in the Fifties for £10. First in the queue at STA's Victoria branch were friends Rosie Emeny, of Romford, Essex, and Ashleigh McPherson, both 22, from Chadwell Heath.

Miss Emeny, a university graduate, said: “The tickets will be saving us about £600 — this was too good an opportunity to give up. Anyone who thinks we are mad for camping out is just jealous.

Grainne Folan, 23, a receptionist, came from Oxford to join the queue. She said: “I had been there every day since last week to check if anyone had started camping out yet. It's just a bargain. It's £10, who wouldn't queue up? It is going to be a dream trip.”

Tom Bentley, 22, of Kilburn, arrived on Monday afternoon. He said: “It was hard to get to sleep but it is worth it for a £10 ticket. It's one-way and I will just worry about how to get back later.”
