Families have been allowed back into the fire-ravaged tower block where six people died in a blaze triggered by a portable television.

A baby and two children were among those who died in the Lakanal House fire in Camberwell on 3 July.

Initial tests found a faulty TV set was the source of the blaze. Southwark Council has indicated it is considering demolishing the 12-storey building.

Residents from the first to seventh floors returned to collect their belongings from the building for the first time last night.

They were given two hours each to collect their possessions and required to wear hard hats and hi-visibility jackets to enter the building.

A Southwark Council spokesman said: “I'm confident we have got the resources in hand to get people into the permanent housing they deserve.”
