A man died today when the quad bike he was riding crashed into a house.

Police said the quad bike was carrying two men when it crashed into an end-terrace house on Main Street, Haverigg, West Cumbria, at 12.24am.

The man who died is believed to have been driving the quad bike. Locals suggested he was aged 18 and from the area.

Police said the second man, an 18-year-old from Millom, received non-life-threatening injuries and is being treated in Furness General Hospital in Barrow-in-Furness.

The drivers of three vehicles who were in the area at the time of the incident have been arrested.

A 20-year-old man who was driving a silver Clio, a 21-year-old man who drove a black Astra, and a 19-year-old woman who drove a white Punto have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

They are all from the Millom area and will be interviewed by officers in Workington today.

A Cumbria Police spokeswoman said there was no damage caused to the house but some garden furniture was broken.

Detectives are expected to investigate whether the vehicles were engaged in a race and if anyone had been drinking.

Police closed the road for six hours while they carried out a detailed examination of the collision scene.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact West Cumbria Road Policing Unit on 0845 33 00 247 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
