Shamed deputy mayor must pay back £2,000 to council

Boris Johnson's disgraced deputy mayor is to be ordered to pay back more than £2,000 to a council after he abused expenses rules.

Ian Clement, right, was leader of Tory-run Bexley council when he used his corporate credit card for meals that had already been paid for and a hotel stay that could not be justified. The probe was launched after Mr Clement's use of his City Hall credit card forced him to resign as deputy mayor for government relations.

Bexley then decided to look at his claims for the previous year when he had held a council credit card from July 2007 to May 2008.

A report advising a total of £2,087.85 be repaid is set to be approved at a council meeting on Monday. The report said Mr Clement had “not adhered to clear guidelines”.

MPs who have used tax payers' money to buy second homes must also be made repay the money to the treasury. Never again will the electorate sit back and allow ourselves be governed by such fraudsters as are in power at the moment.
