Londoner accused of killing teenager faces years on remand in Greek jails

The family of a London student extradited to Greece over the death of a British tourist today told of their fears that he may spend two years in jail before his trial begins.

Andrew Symeou, 20, from Enfield, is accused of killing a British teenager with a punch in a Zante nightclub in 2007. He was extradited last month and has been held in three prisons since and refused bail. The Bournemouth University student says he was in another club at the time.

Speaking from Greece, his father Frank said his "traumatised" son was being denied bail because he was not a Greek citizen. He added that it could take years before a trial and his son dreaded being moved to an adult jail.

Mr Symeou is accused of punching Jonathan Hiles, 18, from Cardiff. His lawyers said that he did not match the killer's description and eight witnesses would testify he was elsewhere.

I would like to think that English law would have good reason for this extradition.
