Ronnie Biggs set for London move after recovery

Nigel Rosser
11 Aug 2009

Freed train robber Ronnie Biggs could be moved to a new home in London as early as this weekend after staging a fightback against the health problems that almost killed him.

Family say the relief of being freed from jail by Justice Secretary Jack Straw has given him the strength to fight the pneumonia and other ailments that threatened his life and that he may be transferred to a nursing home in Barnet later this week. The home is directly linked to the local hospital.

They also say that Biggs' prolonged stay at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, where he will today have surgery to replace the tube which inserts food into his stomach has helped his recovery.

Biggs' improvement - which comes only days after Mr Straw announced that he was freeing the Great Train Robber on compassionate grounds because of medical evidence that he was unlikely to recover - has surprised friends, who were convinced he was going to die at any hour in hospital.

His son Michael had rushed to his father's hospital several times after doctors expressed concern about how long Biggs could survive.

One friend said: “The danger now is him overdoing it. The sheer relief of actually being freed has unlocked reserves of strength the doctors didn't know he still had.

“His major decline came after he had been told he was to be released earlier this year, then Jack Straw decided not to. It really battered his morale and he sunk deep. Now he is feeling genuinely better, but we still aren't clear of the woods.”

Since his release was announced, Biggs has already given a brief interview to a Brazilian TV show, TV Globo's Fantastico.

In it he spelt out “I Love Brazil” on his alphabet board and then said he is missing Brazilian beer.

He is also preparing to update his autobiography “Odd Man Out.”

His ghost writer, Christopher Pickard, who visited him on Sunday, said: “Ron wants to get the final chapters of his life written down.

But it's got to be done slowly. He is still a very, very sick man, but there is still the twinkle in the eye and he has not lost his sense of humour.”

On Saturday, twenty-four hours after Justice Secretary Jack Straw did a U-turn and freed him on compassionate grounds', Biggs was well enough to leave his hospital bed and sit in a chair to mark his 80th birthday. He also got to play with his Brazilian born granddaughter on his first full day of freedom'.

He spelt out: “I've got a bit of living to do. I might even surprise them all by lasting until Christmas. I'll live on just to spite those who want me dead.”

Biggs's 80th birthday fell on the 46th anniversary of the £2.6 million train robbery. He was given a 30-year sentence but after 15 months escaped and spent more than 35 years on the run in Australia and Brazil.

He remained at large until 2001 when, after a number of strokes and 13,068 days on the run, he flew home for treatment.

Last month, Mr Straw refused to grant him parole and it appeared Biggs would die a prisoner. He reversed his decision last week on compassionate grounds after receiving medical evidence that Biggs was unlikely to recover from his multiple health problems.

The mind boggles!

I asked before how many fingers he was using when he waved to the guards on his release - now it's confirmed. He only needed two.

And for the "he's served his time" crowd - it is also a crime to escape from prison. You get time added on for that (unless you can soft-soap the gullible).

Hello Ed, London.

I have not glorified any criminal actions by anyone; and I do not blame society for anything at all; what is; is: and those are the facts, none of which I make or even made; personally etc.

I was the victim of an attempted mugging about five years ago; I don’t blame society for that; to me the muggers were to blame; all I did was knock one out cold; and battered the other four with all I had, just fists and experience etc; this I agree was sheer violence on my part; but I am still alive and kicking today; and I apologize for nothing.

But like Ronnie; I am not going to turn myself in to the police either; even though I broke the law.

I see it this way; it’s better to end up in court alive to face my crimes; then end up in a grave yard dead; and if I got 30 years for my crime; I would do my best to escape; and Brazil is as good as anywhere else; mind you I would come home to die naturally.

Some people are lucky in life; Ed, and some ain’t; and some just get on with the cards they are dealt.

If you knew me; I think you would be surprised at my luck. But that’s my secret…

People on line; are not often what they seem; Ed.

I thought Biggs was supposd to bring a knowledgeable driver into the gang.
Driver Mills was battered because he had shut off the main switch at the back of the cab and no-one knew how to get the locomotive going.Biggs had not got the required expertise on board. The era of personal responsibility ended when Driver Mills heroism and sense of duty was publicly thrown in the media waste bin. Having a sense of duty was just laughed at after this robbery. Anyone want to read about Driver Mills life story?

Hi John L Scarborough.

I don’t drink period; so it’s a waste of time anyone inviting me out for a drink; unless its tea.

Mind you; Tea and Crumpets at the rest centre is ok; it’s free for old age pensions there.

Who needs money old money or new money anyway; it’s not worth a light today; but a good tale is always worth listening to; and 40 years driving a cab; I have lots of true stories to tell.

Is Scarborough like Southend, John; if it is Ronnie will love it; Southend is like Brazil; hardly any Brits at all.

MickinLondon - your justifications are ridiculous. Isn't it about time you grew up instead of glorifying criminal activities and blaming society for any wrongdoing.

I see other people have posted comments supporting Biggs - reality is if they were victims of crime, would they be happy to see people supporting the criminal? No is the answer.

He was part of a violent gang. He was caught and escaped. He spent many years abroad. If he was sorry he would have turned himself in long ago. Scum.

I doubt it very much, the only difference is that people have this romantic version of villians of the 60's which have been glorified by all the books that have been written which makes them sound like little rascals rather than nasty individuals and bullies

Good Afternoon John, London.

I was still in the ring with pros and top amateurs at 60 years of age; just seven years ago actually; but my point was the injuries Mills received etc; had the blow been brutal; Mills would have been knocked cold, maybe even a fractured skull as well etc; but all he had was a facial injury; namely a black eye; he was not kept in Hospital etc.

I also do not glorify anyone in my posts; and if Ronnie Biggs had attacked me in the past or even today; I would soon hit back far worse etc; for that I also would be called a thug etc. But law or no law; I defend myself and my own the best way I can; after all the law doesn’t defend anyone till after the event; and that is a little late in my opinion.

All I try to say John: is my opinion, and give my views on past events which I remember well; as I was actually around at those times etc; if I know nothing; I say nothing.

The comparison with British Bankers has no basis; Bankers rob pension funds and exploit everyone; The Train Robbers; only robbed the train carrying money to be destroyed by the Bank of England etc.

For the record John; the Train Robbery did capture most peoples imagination; and for a while they were admired for their commando style raid on that train etc; this infuriated the Government; and made the Police look stupid etc; hence the 30 years; and at that time, we all knew it was State Vengeance; not normal state justice etc…….Mick.

Ronnie Biggs is a convicted criminal who only served one third of his sentence, that is the plain simple truth,he is not a hero or celebrity but simply a thief,-i am sick of hearing morons glorifying the actions of this criminal and bleating about murderers today only getting eight years inside, its totally irrelevant,he was sentenced 46yrs ago to the letter of the law at that time, and if the train driver had died at the scene of that crime then Biggs would have been hung, its all very simple if you take the time to think before spouting rubbish.

In Biggs's defense: he was not the mastermind, he was not the man who coshed the driver, and coshing the driver was not part of the plan he was in on. He was a bit-part criminal. And now he's a harmless old man who may or may not survive a serious illness.

If there was ever a case for imprisoning him in his dotage, it was to deter others. But no-one gets 30 years for robbery these days. Very few get 30 years for MURDER. The truly evil people who killed baby P will all be out within five years. So who would be deterred?

Let a frail old man enjoy a few beers in a pub before he passes away. Let's keep dying of old age behind bars for those who are a threat to the public for as long as they breathe, such as sadistic killers and paedophile rapists.

Look, we all learn from our past, and you're right that in different circumstances we could all end up in some pretty nasty places. I really don't understand, however, why you glorify a man who traumatised his victim to the extent that he never worked again, whilst Biggs went on the run to live off the spoils of his crime.

That's not decent, honourable behaviour, it's the same mindset that directors of banks and large corporations have when exploiting the working-class and honest, decent people of Britain today.
