VIDEO: Hillary Clinton faces backlash over ‘hissy fit’ in Congo
12.08.09
Hillary Clinton's diplomatic skills are being called into question after her angry outburst when she was mistakenly asked about her husband's views.
The Secretary of State's “hissy fit” has been replayed endlessly on US TV and analysed by critics who say it exposes her limitations as a diplomat.
White House aides played down the incident, while Mrs Clinton's spokesman said she was annoyed by the hint of chauvinism in the question.
Her tantrum came when a student asked her what “Mr Clinton thinks about China's growing influence” on the Congo during a meeting in Kinshasa.
She snapped back: “You want me to tell you what my husband thinks? My husband is not secretary of state, I am. You ask my opinion, I will tell you my opinion. I am not going to be channelling
my husband.”
The French-speaking student later said he had meant to say President Obama. But the sight of Mrs Clinton, America's top diplomat, losing her cool has not gone down well at home.
“If a student in the Congo can get under your skin with a mistranslation and you're unable to deflect it in a gracious diplomatic way, one gets a little concerned when an issue of more consequence comes along,” said Robert Schadler, of the American Foreign Policy Council.
Former US diplomat Ray Walser added: “It was a flippish response. I think it was far from diplomatic.”

Rogan in Irving believes Hillary failed as a diplomat and therefore reflected badly on the US? Doesn't being US Secretary of State have 'ability to court controversy' in the job description? 'Tactful' see M Albright on Hiroshima, 'Managing difficult people and delicate situations', see C Rice on Detainee Torture','Handling people', see Colin Powell and his inability to prevent George W Bush from invading Iraq despite prolonged meetings to persuade him against this course of action. On the basis of this criteria,(dictionary definition) how many US Secretaries of State have reflected well on the USA? In terms of diplomacy, labelling individuals 'feminist lobby' and directing them to dictionaries cannot be described as in any way diplomatic. Thus far, the current US Secretary of State has not defended the use of WOMD against civilian populations, endorsed the use of torture on detainees and sanctioned it or been replaced by someone else for promoting views that the President did not agree with.
In terms of 'reacting badly' - no not really she came off as tough and straight talking. Not only did she make clear her position on her democratic right to exercise her own opinion, she also kept to the guidelines of the deal struck with herself and President Obama about not promoting the business, political or charitable work of her husband.

OK, the feminist lobby has responded (as expected), the equal and opposite responses have been made (equally expected) - and a couple touched upon the nub of the matter. She is supposed to be a DIPLOMAT (look that word up Jane Moore - especially the bit that says, "a person who is tactful and skillful in managing delicate situations, handling people, etc."). She failed.
Trick question? Poor translation? Caught by surprise?
None of that is relevant. She was on the job and she reacted badly - and so reflected badly upon the US as its representative.

Hill channeling Bill? Never happen!!!

I think Hilary was right to refuse to answer such a question (whether mis translated or not). Hilary, (whether you like her or loathe her),is a very intelligent woman with a very impressive CV, apart from bring a former 1st Lady of the USA and Bill Clinton's wife. Perhaps her comments ought to provoke discussion about the role of women on the international world stage, particularly in those countries where women continue to be made to vote for their husband's choice of political party or where they are not allowed to vote at all. Hilary stood up for the democratic right of women everywhere to be entitled to their own opinion and not be marginalised into vocalising opinions that are not their own. Had Hilary gone down the route of "Well Bill thinks...", she would also have left herself wide open to criticism as critics would have taken this to mean that she was merely a puppet for the real office holder, her husband Bill.

Hillary a Wonderful leader and makes a great secretary of state...can u blame her??..she is just cleaning up the mess Bush left around the world. people are just jealous she is a Woman, Very Smart and Powerful!!! Go Hillary!

Please!! She was right to say things the way she did, and be very strong in her response. There was no translation error. That is just the spin doctors trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill. Hissy fit is not a proper choice of words. The response is equal to the response that Obama had in response to the Gates case in Boston, yet his "outburst" was not called a hissy fit. Get with the program people. Hilary is a woman who leads and has the right to correct ignorance in a student population. The disrespect being shown to her by the student was an insult to be sure. Of course an effort would be made by the student and media to make Clinton look bad. Reality Check...Women do not deserve to be labled as having a hissy fit. The word "Histrionics" has the following definition:
1. a dramatic representation; theatricals; acting. 2. behavior or speech for effect, as insincere or exaggerated expression of an emotion; dramatics; operatics: "Cut out the histrionics—we know you're not really mad." Yes, Hilary was really mad, and of course she should have been. It is not a dramatic fake show. I want a leader who is honest. Her response was honest and appreciated.....GO Hilary

It would have been an appropriate question to ask what her husband thinks. She only has the job because of her, and primarily her husbands, promised support during the '08 campaign. She is just arrogant enough to believe that being a political whore makes her the most qualified. I'm not a fan of either of the Clintons but at least her husband didn't have to cherry pick a constituancy in order to win a congressional seat, which she obviously used as just a stepping stone to further herself. What a megalomaniac.

I will like to absorb Ms. Clinton because it is human to err. This is the first time she will cave in under pressure. I seem to agree with Graham from Netherland. Out of the subconscious mind, she acted the little, and the little display has turned out to be the indelible stain. A big lesson with our Public figures, your action speaks volume to us than your world. All the same Hillary remains Hillary. i still see her as very capable to handle her role. Let nobody think otherwise.

Her true colors finally came out. Now we know what Bill has put up with over the years.

This is another example of an unqualified idiot placed in a position of power. With the election of Obamama and the appoinment of Hillary it does not prove that America is taking a new path; it proves just how stupid and liberal the American pople are becoming. It is easier to act like trash instead of imoproving one's self. One Bad Ass Mistake Amererica.

"Can we all be mature?"
Why is this phrase frequently used as a false prop to an untenable argument?
I resent being called a "juvenile" by someone who has an opposite opinion.
Grow up.

Hillary learned one thing from Bill - she ain't no punk! Ol' girl rose up and met that thing head on. You go, girl!

It is important to notice that the translator during this mess did not correctly interpret the question.
Can we all be mature and at least imagine the possibility that Hillary Clinton was reacting to the interpreter's wording of the question, and not the question itself?

What can one say, poor guy, no wonder he did not have a sexual relationship with that girl.
- David Crocket, Bradford, UK.
I have the impression that Hillary Clinton was feeling a little jealous of the publicity surrounding husband Bill´s recent success in North Korea. After all, shouldn´t Ms Clinton, in her capacity as Secretary of State, have performed that mission?
- Graham Rodhouse, Helmond, Netherlands
Actually, she was right last week when she admitted that the Council on Foreign Relations pulls her strings and tells her what to do. Even her husband doesn't have as much clout as the CFR.
