More than 30 people had to be rescued by firefighters after an accident on a roller coaster.

Two cars on the Big Dipper on Blackpool's South Shore crashed together and came to rest 20 feet off the ground.

A number of passengers on the ride suffered superficial injuries, whiplash, broken bones and back injuries.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said around 32 people were evacuated from the ride using assorted stretchers, spine boards and neck collars and brought to safety by a specialist rope rescue team.

A spokesman for the service said the 32 "walking wounded" were then ferried to hospital by the ambulance service.

The Health and Safety Executive is investigating what caused the crash which happened at around 7.45pm.
