Firms have six weeks to draw up Barracks plan

The 10 architecture firms shortlisted to design the Chelsea Barracks redevelopment have six weeks to submit proposals for the £3billion scheme.

Developer Qatari Diar told the Standard the contenders have until 25 September to submit presentations.

Five of the firms on the list announced yesterday have links to Prince Charles. Two of the bidders, Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company and Alan Baxter & Associates, worked on the Prince's model town of Poundbury in Dorset. Another bidder, Sir Terry Farrell, has previously defended Prince Charles against attacks by Lord Rogers.

Initial proposals to redevelop the site, submitted by Lord Rogers, were abandoned after Prince Charles objected.

A source close to Lord Rogers said yesterday that the architect turned down a personal request by the Qatari owners to redraft his plans.

The 10 entrants will now submit a 40-page proposal for the site.

Between the end of this month and mid-October, consultation will take place to gather the views of local residents and organisations.

Towards the end of October the developers will choose three of the 10 contenders for the final shortlist. The firms will then have six weeks to make final submissions, for which they will be paid an undisclosed "honorarium".

From mid-November the three final presentations will be assessed and the winning practice will be announced before the end of the year.

The successful firm can expect to receive about 12.5 per cent of the value of the construction contract, which could be £1billion over several years.

Are these designs ever presented online someplace, as a 3D walk through or something like that? PowerPoint, anything other than one photo in a newspaper?
