The personal art collection of the late film producer Ismail Merchant is to be sold in London.

Merchant won six Baftas in a prolific career working with his collaborator the director James Ivory in a 50-year partnership.

The Indian-born filmmaker, who died in 2005 aged 68, was an avid collector of art and unusual furniture.

Pieces going under the hammer at Christie's are taken from his residences in London, New York and Paris.

Objects include Indian and European paintings, furniture, works of art and a collection of Indian shawls. Estimates range from £500 to £100,000.

The leading item is a large painting showing a group of Indian Thuggees by the Hungarian artist August Schoefft, which is expected to fetch £70,000 to £100,000.

Some Merchant Ivory memorabilia including props from films such as Howards End and Surviving Picasso will also be offered at Christie's South Kensington auction house.

Amin Jaffer, international director of Asian Art at Christie's, said: "Ismail Merchant was a passionate collector.

"The exhibition and auction will be a testament to this great man and his distinguished taste."

The sale will take place on 7 October.
