Taking the medicine

21.08.09

How swine flu advice has changed over the summer.

23 July: The swine flu helpline finally starts. Callers are given Tamiflu if they have a temperature above 38C, and some of the following symptoms: tiredness, headache, sore throat, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, aching muscles, limb and joint pain.

13 August: Andy Burnham is confronted on GMTV by presenter Andrew Castle who says his daughter collapsed after taking Tamiflu. Mr Burnham replies: "Obviously it must have been a very worrying situation for you, but that was in a very different phase of the illness when we were in what we called 'the containment phase', where we were trying to isolate every case and give Tamiflu to those around those cases."

19 August: The Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency reveals 418 reports of adverse reaction to Tamiflu, 12 involving people taking blood-thinning drug Warfarin in which there are concerns over the length of time that blood takes to clot.
