Ashes are in England after Oval win

23 Aug 2009

England have regained the Ashes after beating Australia in a thrilling finale to the series.

A spot of Andrew Flintoff inspiration in his final Test appearance was the turning point at London's Oval ground as the historic urn returned to UK shores.

The title has been Australia's since their 5-0 series victory in 2006-07. The win at the Oval gave England a 2-1 series win.

Flintoff's brilliant run-out of Aussie dangerman and captain Ricky Ponting broke the tourists dogged spirit allowing the England bowlers to tear into the Australian rearguard.

There were emotional scenes on the field and in the stands as the England team and fans celebrated winning cricket's most famous prize.

England captain Andrew Strauss - who was named man of the series by officials - hailed the hard work of his team and staff.

Strauss' side won by 197 runs to reclaim the urn.

"We had to work so hard for it today," Strauss told BBC Radio 5 Live. "These things never come easy. It's been hard work by the XI on the field and the backroom staff as well. It's a massive moment and I'm determined to enjoy it."

Australia captain Ricky Ponting said: "We're all disappointed, obviously, and I guess for me as the captain of the side it's even more disappointing.

"It's probably fair to say I've had a few disappointing times here. It's probably not my favourite ground in the world."
