Stabbed West Ham star: sister’s boyfriend in court

24 Aug 2009

A man accused of stabbing Premiership footballer Calum Davenport in both legs was today remanded in custody.

The 26-year-old West Ham defender was attacked at 5am on Saturday and lost half the blood from his body.

Today Davenport's pregnant sister Cara, 28, was at Bedford magistrates' court to see her boyfriend, Worrell Whitehurst, 25, charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Whitehurst, of Derby, is also accused of causing actual bodily harm to the footballer's mother Kim Stupple, 49, who was stabbed in the same attack.

He was accused of possessing an offensive weapon, a kitchen knife, and driving a car while disqualified. He was remanded to appear at Luton crown court on 16 November.

The footballer is in a stable condition at Bedford hospital with his pregnant wife Zoe at his bedside. His mother is in the hospital in a stable condition.

It is understood Davenport was stabbed after a “blazing family row”.

Today witnesses to the attack, which spilled out onto the street, said Davenport “looked dead” after he was stabbed seven times.

A 19-year-old man who was arrested after the stabbing has been bailed.
