Hundreds evacuated after fire breaks out on train

26.08.09

A train fire in North Wales caused 300 people to be evacuated and the line to be closed for more than two-and-a-half hours.

The blaze took hold in the engine before 6pm last night and the driver needed to bring the Holyhead to Chester service to an emergency stop at Prestatyn station.

There were no injuries to the passengers on board the Arriva Train Wales, but the Holyhead to London line was suspended in both directions until 8.30pm.

Fire crews from Prestatyn, Rhyl and Colwyn Bay fought the flames and the train has now been moved to Rhyl.

The surrounding roads were temporarily closed and diversions put in place, but traffic is now back to normal.

A spokesperson for North Wales police said the cause of the blaze is unknown and an investigation has been launched by the North Wales fire service, but there are no suspicious circumstances.
