You do not have to be British to be a great comedian but maybe it helps.
The nominations for the Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Show were announced today and homegrown talent swept the board.
The nominees are sketch group Idiots of Ants, stand-up comedians John Bishop, Jon Richardson, Russell Kane, Tom Wrigglesworth and spoof poet Tim Key.
The awards, also known as the Eddies, were previously sponsored by Perrier. Theatre producer Nica Burns is financing this year's awards and hopes to have a sponsor for 2010.
The winner of the £8,000 prize will be announced live on Frank Skinner's Absolute Radio show on Saturday afternoon.
