Notting Hill Carnival dog warning

Justin Davenport, Crime Editor
27 Aug 2009

Police today warned dog owners to keep their pets away from Notting Hill Carnival this weekend.

In a message aimed at owners of dangerous pitbull-type dogs, police said they would seize animals they considered a threat to safety at the event.

At last year's Carnival, police seized 20 suspected pitbulls. Police spokesman Chief Inspector Jo Edwards said: "Dogs and Carnival should not mix. People can be intimidated by potentially dangerous dogs, especially in such a crowded environment."

Police have arrested 17 people so far in an operation to clamp down on troublemakers before the Carnival, including a 14-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of supplying drugs.

No other European capital would tolerate this noisy, drug-fuelled criminal mayhem. Ban it now!

nolan , londoner...
Few things sum up what London is all about as much as Carnival.
how did you work that one out ?
true, there may be some areas of london where hanging round on street corners , bob marley and takeaways are the norm and happen 365 days a year , but not all of us !

I said to friend,Leroy, who is a Jamaican,''are you going to the carnival?''. He replied ''no,young people do not know how to behave''.
I do not think it is a race issue,a generational issue maybe.

All dogs in the streets should be muzzled. Soft muzzles are available. Probably able to buy them at the Notting Hill Carnival. Which I have to been three time But since the last time, never again, all those that want to go, you go. But count me out from the carnival. If your in it, you dont see the nonsense going on. If your not in it and at the wrong place..It's hell.

I got caught up in it a few years back and thought it was an over rated pile of rubbish. All I remember were crowds, police cordons, noise and smoke from burning food. Nothing else of importance or excitement. If your idea of fun is being frog-marched along a dirty noisy street then it’s for you.

I've been there Nolan,Londonist and I thought it was a living nightmare.Very threatening with pockets of youths looking for trouble.
I'm no 'knuckle dragger',merely speaking as an observer.

How about doing this on a daily basis rather than just for the oh-so-wonderful carnival?
More media-led policing from our caring sharing police service?

Such a shame that the knuckle draggers are praying for trouble at the carnival just so that they can spout their vile, reactionary rubbish. After all, you never get any trouble at events mainly attended by the 'indigenous' population do you now, or was Tuesday night just a bad dream? Go to the carnival and have fun but if you are full of hate or want to cause trouble stay away. Decent, law-abiding revellers of all races won't want you there!

Why is it allowed to carry on? Because it is a brilliant, exciting, fun-filled family party! Few things sum up what London is all about as much as Carnival.

I wonder how many of the killjoys who will be "giving it a wide berth" have ever been to Carnival. You don't know what you're missing.

The Notting Hill Gang & Crime Festival is upon us once again. Lets see how many people are mugged, knifed or beaten this year?

Oh Steve, lose the chip on your shoulder! What are you afraid off? I've been to two West Ham v Millwall games in the past, although not on Tuesday, and 3 carnivals. Luckily I've not witnessed trouble at either event. If you are sensible and watch out for the scum you should be ok. Or is it just you prefer the company of moronic knuckle draggers?

Why don't they change the law so these dogs have to be muzzled in public, Spain just introduced this, and it works well.

Best to scrap this so called carnival, we all know why it's allowed to carry on being held, but if we say so, we will be called rascists.

Personally i couldn't think of anything worse than a carnival in London especially with the type of crowd this event attracts.
I'm certainly going to give it a hugely wide berth.

- Greg, London, 27/08/2009 11:27

We can also be intimidated by potentially dangerous people.
Hence the reason a lot of folk who have any sense give this event a wide berth.Personally I'd feel safer watching West Ham v Millwall.
