Xbox 360
Competition: Xbox 360 Elite, now £199

Price cut puts Xbox ahead of game

Microsoft will tomorrow cut the price of its Xbox 360 games console in the latest round of a high-street battle.

The high-definition version, the Xbox 360 Elite, will be reduced from £229 to £199. This comes days after Sony introduced a cheaper version of its Playstation 3 console for £249, cutting £50 off.

This leaves Nintendo the only firm not to have cut the price of its £179 Wii.

Manufacturers hope the price cuts will kickstart the market. The latest figures show a 5.7 per cent drop in year-on-year video games sales in the UK in the first half of this year. Nintendo holds the number one position, followed by Microsoft then Sony.

Later this year Microsoft is set to add access to Twitter, Facebook and live Sky TV to the Xbox 360.

No wifi, no Blu-ray, sounds like a bargain.

The 360 still doesn't include WiFi though, and the adapter needed costs around £55, so it's not such a bargain unless you don't want to use the online features or fancy having ethernet cables trailing around your house.
