Richer pensioners face care bill 'tax'

Nicholas Cecil, Deputy Political Editor
27 Aug 2009

Wealthy pensioners could be forced to pay more than £20,000 under a scheme to cover long-term care.

Health Secretary Andy Burnham is considering a graduated system of insurance premiums for the plan to meet the cost of looking after people in their old age.

Options proposed include a compulsory insurance sum paid upon retirement.

The middle classes are now taking a real hammering from this government. Generally they pay more tax per head, and now are expected to contribute more and more financially through schemes like this. Also their children now appear to be actively discriminated against when it comes to entrance to university (especially if they went to private school and saved the state the cost of education). Also we are now hearing about increases in council tax for views, nice areas, etc – again aimed at the middle class. Why?????

The trouble with having the God Squad run the country is that they think the Parable of the Vineyard - where it didn't matter how late you started picking the vines/became Christian, everyone had the same right to go to Heaven - applies to the corporeal world of taxation.

What possible incentive is there to save money if the people who fritter theirs on bling, booze and holidays get rewarded with free healthcare in old age, whereas those who have worked hard, paid their taxes and delayed their gratification until old age then get collared for more tax?!

You can just imagine what bullies this bunch must have been when they were in the playground . . .

Everyone pays the same tax towards health care I believe?

If this is the latest crazy proposal from this corrupt government, then let's have a tax rebate for those who were prudent and saved.

These thieving rich socialists, how low will they stoop.

Well only one thing left to do. Spend everything you have before retiring and just wait for the handouts.

Labour's Britain where you're penalised for having savings. It's certainly cool to be poor in this country.

Why should I save for retirement if all that happens is that the money I saved (and paid tax on!) is then taken away by the government?
