Murder hunt launched after man dies in shooting

02.09.09

A murder hunt was under way today after a man died in a shooting incident, police said.

The 22-year-old was found with serious head injuries on a pavement in Luton, Bedfordshire, just before 9pm yesterday.

He was taken to hospital but doctors were unable to save him.

Officers had been alerted following reports of a gunshot in the area.

The victim was found lying in Haymarket Road, a residential part of the town.

He was taken to Luton and Dunstable Hospital where he later died. A post-mortem examination will be carried out today.

Bedfordshire Police said the area had been cordoned off while forensic experts carried out a fingertip search.

Police had also stepped up patrols in the area to reassure the public, a force spokesman said.

Detective Superintendent Mick Hanlon of Beds and Herts Major Crime Unit is leading the murder hunt.

Officers said they were "keeping an open mind" on the motive for the killing.

Anyone with information should call police on 01234 841212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
