Londoners are being asked to nominate their city heroes for an award.

Voters can also put forward their favourite capital activity for Visit London People's Choice Awards.

They are part of the BT Visit London Awards 2009, supported by the Evening Standard. The four categories nominated by the public are for best family experience, best free experience, "hottest" music event and a hero who has made a difference to London.

Sally Chatterjee, interim CEO of London's official visitor organisation, said: "It's great to recognise the outstanding contribution by businesses and individuals to help make our capital the number one destination in the world."

Nominations are open until Sunday 13 September and the shortlist will be announced the next day. Judges will announce the winners at Westfield shopping centre on 5 November.

I'd nominate Eddie Izzard after his wonderful selfless achievement but as he's from the Hastings area, he probably wouldn't qualify. My second choice would therefore be maybe Joseph Bazalgette?

As free experiences go, you can't beat a good rummage in the bushes of Hampstead Heath at dusk.

Official complaint: Voting for one's LONDON hero should not be open to any old Tom, Dick or Harriet - especially is they reside in Europe.

I am tempted to nominate Boudica, the Iceni queen, as my London heroine. She torched the place back in 61 AD, much to the annoyance of the Romans and the local population. I don´t suppose the "People´s Choice Awards" would accept that though ...............

I can combine two 'family experience' and 'best free experience'

Sitting with the family in a car for hours in summer because so much transport is out of action and there are major infrastructure works in every main road !

How we laughed . . . . . !
