London gets travellers' vote as the best city in UK

London has been voted the nation's favourite city for the second year in a row by readers of a leading travel magazine.

The capital was picked ahead of Edinburgh and Liverpool, which were placed second and third respectively, following the poll by Condé Nast Traveller.

Readers highlighted London's array of top restaurants, museums and theatres and pointed to its thriving night-life in the results of the survey announced today.

Bath climbed three places to fourth this year, while Canterbury was a new entry clinching 10th place in the 11th annual Condé Nast Readers' Travel Awards.

Despite topping the poll, London scored badly for cleanliness and was thought to be less environmentally friendly than most of its rivals.

Neither does it offer the best value for money, readers said, with that accolade instead going to Manchester.

The results for the top UK city were based on questionnaires relating to criteria such as aesthetics, cleanliness, culture, food and restaurants, entertainment, people and hospitality, and value for money.

The magazine's editor Sarah Miller said: "London has come top of our readers' choice of favourite cities thanks to its glorious architecture, fabulous range of restaurants and cuisines, amazing choices of entertainment, world-class culture and its incredible selection of first-rate hotels."

London was followed in the top 10 by Edinburgh, Liverpool, Bath, Oxford, Manchester, York, Glasgow, Brighton, and Canterbury.

Jock's correct, whilst Conde Naste are a large publishing house, Traveller magazine's readership hardly constitutes a cross section of the UK now does it? I'd never heard of it so asking around no one I asked had heard of it either, I think we can ignore this one as blatant self promotion, and it appears to have worked.

Having had a brief look at Conde Nast, I can't believe this result to be indicative of how the majority of people in the UK would have voted.

As an ordinary man on the street, I'd never heard of the magazine. And with sections on A list hotels, and another telling me what to wear, I doubt I'll ever buy it. Seems more suited to the Sloanes and Hoorays.

Nick, wonder no more. I am from London and agree with the finding. London without doubt is a fantastic place in so many respects and although it has it's down side so does every other place including even your little patch of heaven, southend.

It makes sense, they don't have computers outside zone 6 so only Londoners could vote.

I was wondering how many people who responded were prospective migrants, illegal immigrants and responding from a country providing a significant part of the bludgeoning London population.
