Muslim 'hate crime victim' is arrested

4 Sep 2009

A Muslim community leader who said he had been abducted and told to stop running prayer sessions was in custody today after being arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, police sources said.

Noor Ramjanally of Loughton, Essex, was being questioned at a police station a week after telling officers he had been bundled into a car at knifepoint by two white men, sources added.

Mr Ramjanally, who is in his mid-30s, last week told officers he had been the victim of a terror campaign which involved threats against his family. At the time police said they were treating the allegations as a hate crime.

A spokesman for Essex Police would say only that a man in his 30s had been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and was being questioned.
