Commuters will be able to travel for less when using Oyster pay-as-you-go if they avoid Zone 1 when travelling across London, it was announced today.
New Oyster card readers are to be installed at key overground and Tube stations allowing passengers to register when they have avoided central London.
Currently the system charges people the maximum fare when they travel across the capital, assuming they have been in Zone 1.
From Sunday, the new pink "Oyster route validators" can be used when people change between services at Gospel Oak, Gunnersbury, Highbury & Islington, Kensington Olympia, Rayners Lane, Stratford, West Brompton, Willesden Junction and Blackhorse Road.
Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor's transport adviser, said: "This latest improvement again shows the Mayor's commitment to delivering Oyster on National Rail and also ensuring that fare-paying passengers get the best deal when using Oyster."
The improvement is part of a £40 million upgrade of Oyster that will enable the roll-out of pay-as-you-go on National Rail services in London from next January.
A customer information campaign including posters, leaflets and station platform announcements will help inform passengers of the new system.
The new machines are similar in appearance to existing passenger validators but have pink rather than the yellow card readers.
The new readers have been installed where passengers commonly change trains or services.
