A British climber died after falling down Mount Olympus in Greece, local police said today.

Stephen Wright, 22, from Gloucestershire, was climbing at 2,297ft (700m) in a remote rocky area of Olympus with a Greek friend from university when he fell, suffering serious head injuries, yesterday evening.

Volunteers and rescue teams rushed to help but he died at around 3.10am local time (1.10GMT), police said.

The Foreign Office confirmed the death of a British national on Mount Olympus in Greece.

A spokeswoman said: "Consular officers are in touch with the local authorities."
