Journalist and playwright Keith Waterhouse died today at the age of 80.

His family said the Billy Liar writer died “quietly in his sleep” at home this morning.

His credits include satires That Was The Week That Was and The Frost Report and the play Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell.

Waterhouse was one of the country's most versatile writers and his 1959 book Billy Liar was turned into a film by John Schlesinger with Tom Courtenay in the title role.

He began his career on the Yorkshire Evening Post and wrote a column first for the Daily Mirror and then for the Daily Mail.

The twice-married writer suffered ill health in recent years and retired from the Mail in May this year after 60 years in journalism.
