The £2million fee for businesses to sponsor academy schools is to be scrapped, the Government said today.
From September 2011, private firms and voluntary organisations will instead be assessed on how well they would run an academy.
The fee was scrapped for universities and schools two years ago.
It is expected the latest move will make it easier for businesses to become sponsors in the economic downturn.
Schools Secretary Ed Balls said: "Academy sponsorship has never just been about the money - we want the people and organisations with the right skills and leadership to come into the academy programme.
"Scrapping the £2million sponsorship has led to a boom in the number of universities, schools and colleges coming in - so it makes sense to do the same for the voluntary and private sector."
Proposals will be published this autumn about how sponsors will be assessed.
