Iran defiant on nuclear project

Ed Harris
07.09.09

Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said today Tehran would neither halt uranium enrichment nor negotiate over its nuclear rights.

But the president said he was ready to talk to world powers about “global challenges”.

His statements came as the international nuclear watchdog warned of a “stalemate” over Iran's nuclear programme.

The UN's International Atomic Energy Agency began meetings in Vienna that could set tougher sanctions.

The US and its allies accuse Iran of using its nuclear energy programme as a cover to develop weapons, which Tehran denies.
