Deal hope as BA agrees job cuts with unions

Dick Murray

Hopes rose today of a deal between British Airways and the unions to end the threat of major autumn disruption for hundreds of thousands of travellers.

A meeting on Friday near Heathrow will tell union bosses the outcome of BA's cuts programme.
BA has agreed there will be no compulsory redundancies — a key factor.

There will still be hundreds of voluntary redundancies but these will be agreed by negotiation.

A union source connected with talks at Acas, the conciliation service, said: “It looks as though we could be heading towards a deal.”

Another source stressed, however, that there are still “major obstacles” to overcome.
