Beatlemania hit London today as fans rushed to buy the band's back catalogue and an animated videogame.

The re-mastered catalogue of 14 albums and the MTV game The Beatles: Rock Band were released simultaneously, with fans queuing from 3am.

DJ Alan Harrington, 59, was first in line at HMV in Oxford Street when doors opened at 9.09am.

He bought a limited edition The Beatles: Rock Band, which retails at £179.99. He said he also planned to spend up to £800 on the CD box sets later today.

"I am very excited. I queued for The Beatles in '63 and I'm queuing up now."

Brazilian Marco Antonio Mallagi, on a Beatles-themed holiday, spent £2,246 on 10 box sets, 11 re-mastered albums and the game.

The tills won't be ringing with my hard earned. The drab four have had their day.Not that they should have made it big in the first place. They were lucky there was no music around when they tried their luck.

Here we go,I'm dreading it,the Beatles hype all over again.I thought I'd escaped it as I was only a baby when that utter rubbish assaulted our airwaves.Overrated dross from four gormless blokes with pudding bowls on their heads and dodgy suits.

Had to catch a cab out of it - almost got crushed by an army of wrinkly zimmers.

Today's bands (and those of the past 10 years) put the Beatles to shame - and all the clever re-mastering of tat will fool no-one.
