Hammersmith Palais is set to be turned into student flats

The Hammersmith Palais is likely to be knocked down and replaced with a students' hall of residence.

Hammersmith and Fulham council is considering proposals for the venue, which closed in 2007. A decision is expected in November.

Developer London & Regional has permission to replace it with offices and restaurants, but is understood to be looking for a more recession-proof plan.

The plans comprise a building that is divided into five and 10 storeys fronting Shepherd's Bush Road, with shops and more than 2,800 square metres of leisure space, according to a planning statement.

There will be some 429 student studios, singles and doubles. London & Regional would not comment.

A spokeswoman for the council said it could not discuss the plans before the meeting in November.

The Palais, which opened in 1919, has held concerts by The Cure, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones and The Sex Pistols.

Soon there will be nothing of any significance left in this City as our relentless demand for housing continues.
Shame.

The day they knocked down the palais
Part of my childhood died, just died.
