Former Pakistani dictator Pervez Musharraf is living in a flat near Edgware Road, it has been revealed.

The former military leader has swapped the presidential palace in Islamabad for a relatively modest flat surrounded by the shisha bars and kebab joints of London's Arabic quarter.

The area is also home to Tony Blair, who owns a large house in nearby Connaught Square.

Musharraf has chosen a simple apartment in a red-brick complex in which to retire.

It is a contrast to the pomp of Musharraf's nine-year rule in Pakistan, during which he was guarded by liveried soldiers and surrounded by political acolytes.

But security remains tight at his £1 million London flat.

The retired general is guarded by a small team of retired Pakistani commandos, which he pays for himself, and has a protection detail from Scotland Yard.

He is said to dine regularly at the Dorchester hotel and hosts regular music evenings in his flat.

A recent YouTube video revealed him to be an accomplished Urdu singer.

He is said to regularly play golf and often plays bridge with his confidante, Brigadier Niaz Ahmed, a retired arms dealer.

In Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, the former prime minister Musharraf ousted in a coup in 1999, wants him tried for treason, a charge that carries the death penalty.

Yet few pundits believe Musharraf will face trial in the near future. The army, led by General Pervez Kayani, opposes a treason charge. So does the civilian president, Asif Zardari, who fears it could upset fragile civil-military relations.

Nevertheless it is claimed that the general, who resigned 13 months ago, is better served by being out of Pakistan.

It is claimed that Musharraf pays £450 to hire an official VIP lounge every time he flies from or to Heathrow airport, and travels in a bulletproof vehicle.

However, it is the nature and cost of his taxpayer-funded protection that is most controversial.

Lord Nazir Ahmed, a critic in the House of Lords, tabled a parliamentary question about the cost of these security arrangements in July.

The government replied that it was “established Home Office policy not to comment on protective security arrangements and their related costs”.

Nazir said: “Our old age pensioners don't get security, so how can we pay for an old general who wants to enjoy himself in London?”

The Pakistan-born peer said he was collecting evidence for a possible war crimes prosecution through Bindmans solicitors, who pursued the retired Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet through the British courts in the late 1990s.

It is claimed that Musharraf is on a visitor's visa and it has been reported that he intends to take up permanent residence in the Middle East or in the US, where his son Bilal lives.

He should be ashamed of him self that he has been thrown out of his own country and now being protected by another's country security. He did many things wrong in Pakistan by considering him self ''the one and only'' for all the decisions. This is what a true dictator does. If West call them selves democracy lovers then he should be thrown away as soon as possible because he demolished a democratic govt in Pakistan. He did this just because he would be sacked by the prime minister of that time. He did few things good as well but those good things will always be overshadowed by his ruthless and selfish way of ruling a country.

MUSHARRAF TO COME BACK TO PAKISTAN AND STAND IN ELECTIONS IN FUTURE TO RUN THE COUNTRY ONCE AGAIN,we salute Mr. Musharraf for his good will for Pakistan. MR. Musharraf has done nothing to deserve treason charge against him as Nawaz Sharif wants. His record is quite satisfactory. He ousted Nawaz Sharif when he outlandishly tried to sack him as C-in-C and would not allow the commercial plane he was travelling in to land. There were 200 passengers besides him in the plane and the fuel was low and Nawaz sharif was about to commit a very big crime.
The plane was landed at the intervening of the deputy commanders of Musharraf and he then took over and sacked the P.M. and ruled for 9 years. The outstanding things he did are:
He demolished a terror training centre the Lal Masjid, whose Maulanas wanted to rule Pakistan through Fatwa manufactured in their brand of Islam.
Broke the hub of the politicised judiciary headed by Iftekhar Mohammad Chaudhari by sacking them who were restored later. And they restored the Lal Masjid Maulana and Nawaz Sharif.
But Musharraf had no control over a part of the army and Benazir was killed and the evidences washed clean.
And what Musharraf does not realise is that Asif Ali Zardari is a smarter man than him and his and Zardari's enemies are common.
The writer of the article does not realise Musharraf can afford a grander living place, he puposely cooses the surrounding of the Kebab joints for free security. You see, he is a commando, a general, and then an ex-president.

Everyone has forgotten he was working with the Americans and British "War on Terror" program. He let the Americans come into his country and chase the TeleBans and AlQuida. He tried to keep stability in the Area. Now the 2 Monkeys in power in Pakistan will habour terrorists for us in the UK. Musharraf was a American and British supporter in a difficult or impossible Country.

So I take it then these Commandos are allowed to carry arms ? Are there any other former foreign luminaries we have to pay to protect and how many people do you think will be killed in cnetral when he is most likely assasinated.

Just like to thank the weak willed home office in advance.

How did he get a visa and why are we paying for him to be protected, what did he ever do for Britain?

"guarded by a small team of retired Pakistani commandos, which he pays for himself"
Shame the same can't be said for Blair but then I guess he's a much bigger target than a military despot having illegally invaded a country, ridden roughshod over his voting public and broken almost all of his election promises.

Funny how all these anti-West ex-dictators always choose to frolic here. Remember tax-payers, you are also paying for the blighter out of foreign aid too.
