Mandelson's two Lockerbie meetings

Nicholas Cecil, Deputy Political Editor
10 Sep 2009

Lord Mandelson twice discussed the Lockerbie bomber's release with Colonel Gaddafi's son, his department said today.

The admission sparked fresh questions over the Business Secretary's involvement in talks on freeing Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi and whether it was part of a secret oil deal - a claim denied by the Government.

In reply to a parliamentary question, business minister Pat McFadden said Lord Mandelson discussed the bomber's case with Saif Gaddafi at an official meeting, believed to have been in London in May.

Mr McFadden added: "There was no discussion of commercial contracts for oil and gas."

Lord Mandelson's officials have already said that the two men also discussed Megrahi when they met at the Rothschilds' villa in Corfu this summer.

Lord Mandelson has dismissed as "wrong, completely implausible and actually quite offensive" that there was any trade deal as part of the decision to free the Lockerbie bomber.

If I were a gambling man I would bet that before very long Mandelson will be a guest on one of Mr Gaddafi's yachts.

Offensive indeed, I'm sure he was just discussing his holiday arrangements.
