London took part in the world's biggest fashion event as thousands of shoppers flocked to the high street for a night of discounts and in-store parties.

Shops across the capital took part in London's Fashion Night Out, which coincided with efforts in cities including Paris, Milan, New York, Mumbai, Beijing and Moscow to lure shoppers back to high streets.

More than 125 stores along Oxford Street, Bond Street, Carnaby Street and Regent Street stayed open late and held parties which were attended by the likes of Sarah Brown, Samantha Cameron, Princess Beatrice, her sister Eugenie and Pixie Geldof.

The event - organised by Vogue - involved brands including Agent Provocateur, Alexander McQueen, Tommy Hilfiger and Topshop. At a temporary Gap pop-up store off Carnaby Street, pop star VV Brown played, while at Liberty on Regent Street customers shopped through the night and were even given a midnight feast with food from restaurant Bob Bob Ricard.

In New York Vogue boss Anna Wintour kept a low profile, eschewing Fifth Avenue for a Macy's in Queens, but shoppers packed stores taking part in the Night Out.

At Bergdorf Goodman Victoria Beckham joined Padma Lakshmi, former girlfriend of Salman Rushdie, while the Olsen twins handed out cocktails. Security had to be called in to deal with the crush.

Justin Timberlake was making an appearance at Saks, Charlize Theron at Dior, Kate Hudson at Stella McCartney. and Oscar de la Renta was singing to loyal customers.

Every country with a local edition of Vogue, including Brazil, Japan, Taiwan, India, Russia, China and Spain, took part.
