British Gas suspend 30 workers over bill tampering claims

11.09.09

Up to 30 British Gas workers have been suspended after they were allegedly caught tampering with their own bills, it was disclosed today.

The firm said it was investigating after staff at its Leicester-based call centre allegedly found they could cut their own gas and electricity bills.

British Gas said the employees did not have full access to customers' accounts and dealt with the business-side of the firm's operation.

About 1,200 staff are based at the call centre where the allegations were made.

British Gas supplies 16 million households across the country with both gas and electricity.

A spokesman for the company said: "British Gas confirmed that a small number of staff members have been suspended following alleged misconduct.

"It would be inappropriate to comment any further whilst investigations are ongoing."

From my own experience, it my belief that British Gas tamper with everyone's bills. An overcharge of £300 plus, an illegal unauthorized debit from my bank card, promises to correct the mistakes and compensation (ha ha!) that were not honoured. A response to a detailed layout of how my bills should have been raised as per actual gas usage of "What do you expect me to do with this" from their customer services department. Not to mention spending a fortune on phone calls and the time wasted trying to get through. Has me vowing never to use their services ever again.
