£1m Elgar Room will be Albert's mini concert hall

Louise Jury, Chief Arts Correspondent

A £1million performance space is being unveiled in the Royal Albert Hall in a room where actors from Laurence Olivier to Judi Dench learned their trade.

The Elgar Room has been renovated to create a new venue for gigs, comedy nights and parties, and its raised flooring taken out to create a space that can hold 350 standing or 110 if it is used as a restaurant.

The room was previously called the West Theatre and housed the Central School of Speech and Drama from 1906 to 1957.
