School mistress jailed for lesbian affair with teen pupil
Paul Cheston, Courts Correspondent21 Sep 2009
A public school music teacher nickanmed Jazz Lady wept today as she was jailed for 15 months for having a lesbian affair with a 15-year-old pupil.
Helen Goddard took the teenager for coffee after music lessons before their relationship developed into a five-month affair, including a weekend in Paris.
Their illict meetings remained a secret until the £13,000-a-year top London public school for girls, which cannot be named for legal reasons, received an anonymous tip-off and care workers immediately contacted the police.
When officers raided the teacher's housing estate maisonette in Greenwich they found the teenager with the 26-year-old and seized various sex toys including vibrators and "fluffy handcuffs".
Today Goddard claimed she had been "pressurised" into the affair but the victim's parents condemned her in scathing terms for the total betrayal of trust.
At Southwark Crown Court Goddard, a former child music prodigy, admitted six sample counts of sexual activity with the girl between February and July this year.
The court heard that Goddard, who played at the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics in 2000, told the girl she loved her.
The affair had started when the teacher and pupil started to discuss "personal issues" together before the girl tried to kiss the older woman.
The teenager would tell her parents she was going to stay over at friends' houses when she was spenging nights with Goddard who told her housemates that the girl was a student.
Prosecutor Regina Naughton said: "Goddard was aware that this was the girl's first sexual relationship. She told her that if she was uncomfortable with anything, it would stop."
When the couple visited Paris they stayed at a hotel and went on a gay pride march together.
The affair was discovered after rumour spread through the school and an anonymous email was sent from "a concerned parent."
When police examined the girl's mobile telephone, they found one message from the teacher reading:"'It's going to be a beautiful day. I love you. You were on my mind all night."
Following the arrest, the girl told her mother that she had instigated the relationship and felt 'guilty' about the situation Goddard found herself in.
In a victim impact statement to the court, the girl's father said: "Under the guise of helping our daughter, we now understand that for five months Miss Goddard was betraying our trust.
"Miss Goddard did not stay true to her professional responsibilities. 'When our daughter told us she was going to visit or stay over with friends from her peer group, Miss Goddard cooperated fully in that deception."
Goddard was suspended from her post at the London school, and has been ordered to sign on to the sexual offenders' register for 10 years and banned from working with children for life.
Sentencing, Judge Anthony Pitts told her: "I have to approach this case on the basis that gender can make little difference to sentence."

Heterosexual or homosexual, a paedophile is a paedophile.
Perhaps you should explain why you appear to believe that being a homosexual should be seen as a mitigating circumstance when charged with sex offences against minors?

If it was a fat, ugly, male YOUNG teacher in the dock, my view would remain unchanged. I think the ages of consent for many things - paying tax, dying for one's country, marrying, having sex - are all a bit confused and not correctly aligned to the maturity of modern teenagers. I had first-hand experience of paedophilia as a child: trust me, this is different. I agree the teacher was foolish and I really question why the whole school knew about it except, apparently, the head teacher. I went to an all-girls school myself and found it astonishing that the Head managed to employ 2 obviously Lesbian women as House Mistresses - in charges of Boarders - who I'd say rather over-stepped the mark with one or two girls who we all knew to be Lesbians. The school also employed a 23 year old man to be the A Level Maths teacher: the poor man clearly had a crush one of his students, who was not reprimanded when, as part of her role as a harlot in a House Play, she walked into the audience and carried on singing whilst straddling his lap wearing a corset. After a few other incidents of gifts of underwear left anonymously for him, etc. the poor man I believe had a break-down and left - he then dated one of his students. The Lesbian House-mistresses also hooked up together before one heartlessly left on a motorbike with someone else, leaving the other to pass out drunk through a triple A Level science lesson. As with this case, poorly managed from the top, I'd say.

As a Teacher I recognise it is common for pupils to be attracted to tutors. The only barrier preventing teachers from taking the easy route of allow a relationship to prosper is the fear of unforgiving punishment. The matter of who started what has nothing to do with it, it is a matter of trust and reasonability and in that Helen Goddard has failed on a gargantuan scale. Helen Goddard has done something Teachers are trained to ignore on a Dailey basis and the sentence handed out here helps keep the lines in the sand very clear to Teachers entering the profession or anyone being tempted by flirty children who are not emotionally as strong as people making comments here think they are.
Without a doubt the looks of Helen Goddard have swayed a few peoples judgement, which is truly sad. 15-year-old girls need shielding from people like this the beauty only masks the evil.

I feel great sympathy for both poor girls, who had a mutually consensual relationship. Helen Goddard is being branded the same as a paedophile, who is someone who preys on young children just for sexual gratification. She is a sheltered young woman who has had one loving relationship with someone else who, it could be argued, is also a young woman. Here in France, it would not have been a crime: the legal age of consent is 15. If this had been either of my neices who've just turned 16 I'd have said they were mature enough to know what they are doing - as they're very pretty I also warned a single friend in his 30s when he first met them that they were only 14, which astonished him.
Personally I think the hysteria over teenage sex is ridiculous: since the dawn of time young women of 15 were at the age to get married and start bearing kids. In 1275 the legal age of conset was set at 12 and remained so until it was raised to 13 in 1875 and then 16 in 1885. I'd say the teenagers today are more liberated, knowledgeable and mature than those of 1885. Helen Goddard has lost her good name, her ability to work, the love of her family, her pet dog and probably her home will be sold all for the immature decision not to wait a few months: she has truly been punished. I would have just the same sympathy if she had been a young man. I wonder if the girl's parents simply cannot cope with the news she is a Lesbian?

So can we make up our mind about the age of children .Is an 18 year old a child if she looks 15 and vice verser.I think maybe at 15 a child is not entirely stupid and should assume some responsibility for her actions. After all if she was a shop lifter the courts would not lock up the shop keeper and let the child go free. A 15 yr old child knows it is wrong to shop lift and also to play sex games with their teacher. We also jail 15 yr olds for murder but not for sex ( they are always the victim).Come on please have a bit of sense

With reference to the definition of paedophile the only reference to prepubescence is found in the medical definition of the condition.
Everywhere else it is defined as having the repeated urge to engage in sexual activity with a child.
A child is a person who has yet to reach the age of majority, in the UK that is 18.
In the UK all sexual activity with children below the age of 16 is unlawful .
Goddard is a sex offender as defined by British law. In common parlance she is a paedophile.
There is plenty of case history regarding custodial sentencing for offences similar to this.
I am quite shocked and disappointed that so many have come out in support of a woman who has betrayed the trust placed in her by society at large.
You have clearly never witnessed to fallout from this kind of criminal behaviour.

Paedophiles rape prepubescent children. The 15yo was consensual. She wasn't "groomed", any more than a shoplifter is "groomed" by an older accomplice, and the criminal age of responsibility is 10.
The girl couldn't get pregnant, and was no more likely to catch a disease than buying a take-away.
And if the girl wasn't mature enough to handle a relationship psychologically, how do you think she handled the court case?
No-one goes to prison for "an abuse of trust", otherwise prison would be full of offenders, young and old. Do you think the daughter is going to trust her parents, her school and the law?
So why does the law say that a 15-year-old shouldn't have consensual sex with an older person?
Perhaps the 15-year-old should stick with self-abuse. Is that still a crime?

How common are women paedophiles?
Research into women who abuse is sparse, and invariably, paedophiles are thought of as men. Jane looks at the issue of women paedophiles, and asks why they do it; Are there key differences between male and female sexual offending? A quick point in reference to the cases you pointed out to me. The first one, the teaching assistant had affairs with 2 15 year old girls - so that isn't entirely comparable.
Secondly the 16 year old and the 30 year old man - yes I agree, I think that this sentence might well be based on homophobia rather than the actual case (as I believe this one may be too)
Thirdly - the final one you quote the 'offender' was given community service only, so again it is not entirely comparable is it - she has got a jail term of 15 months.

It's clearly a problem describing post-pubescents as children when nature proves otherwise and, equally, applying the term paedophile, such as in cases like this. The prinicipal problem in this case is that the older party was a secondary-level teacher of the younger party and for very many good reasons teachers must understand without questioning that close, personal relationships with any pupil are fundamentally unprofessional and totally forbidden.

I do not personally wish to comment on the merits or not of the prosecution or the sentence, but some of the contributions here have clearly been founded on an ignorance of the law concerned.
Some have suggested that as the girl was fifteen it would have been effectively 'alright' had the teacher waited until the girl's 16th birthday. That does not apply where the adult is in a position of trust, such as being the girl's teacher: the minimum age under the law in that case is 18. Consequently a university lecturer could legally have a sexual relationship with a student 18 or over (his employer or others may view as inappropriate) but a teacher could not have one with say a sixth form pupil, who is under 18.
To Suzy some facts to sully your argument:
Feb 2009 in Bridgend teaching assistant James Davies ,23, 12 mths prison for sexual activity with two 15 year old schoolgirls.
June 207 in Cardiff David Le Brocq ,30, 12mths prison for sexual relations with schoolboy in Reading - boy was 16 (not 15).
In Jan 2009 in Aberdeen Alison Smith ,29, 200 hours community service for sex with boy pupil 15.
Individual facts and circumstances apply.
To Gary of Brentwood and others of similar view. Is a single relationship with a person near age of general consent paedophilia, epecially if initiated by other party? It is a sex offenders register and not a paedophiles register. Judge considers the likelihood of reoffending: is a boy of 19 after sex with girl 14 a lifetime offender?

I'm not happy with this sentence at all. What's the point of this woman serving time in prison? What will it achieve? It was consensual (I acknowledge the girl was one year under the age of consent...) but girls and boys have sex at 15 and will continue to do so. The fact here is a breach of trust. The solution is to ban her from teaching (which they have done and is enough). I acknowledge there are paedophiles that prey on children but in this case I would say the situation was different. This sentence is unjust and wastes tax payer’s money.

This does seem a borderline case in most ways, but the issue behind the sentence is surely the abuse of power? Had the accused not been the girl's teacher, the reaction would not have been so severe.

I have very mixed feelings about this issue. I think it was wrong for the teacher to have sex with a 15 year old, she should have waited until it was legal. However, it does seem that they were/are in love. I don't think she is a sex offender, as it was consensual sex, and the 15 year old was old enough to make an informed decision.
I was sexually abused as a child from 4 years old. As a 4 year old I had no choice. Most 15 year olds can make an informed choice,I believe this young woman made that choice. The teacher was foolish, and gave into her feelings. That is her only crime! I doubt if she would have been jailed had the relationship been heterosexual.

Paul R, London - the laws relate to a cut-off line for when it is acceptable and when it is not. It can't float up and down according to whim. Young girls go off with older men "because they are in love with them and they just want to be like ordinary people in love" - and the man is still guilty. He knew better and CHOSE to continue. How does a lesbian affair differ?
The other side-issues would come anyway (about people "being enticed/forced into becoming a lesbian" or whatever) - it's what parents do when they are trying to rationalize "what went wrong". The only issue here is that the older woman knew she was doing wrong and still tried it on anyway.

I think you'll find actually a paedophile is defined as someone with a sexual interest in pre-pubescent children, which is not evident in this case.
Age of consent laws have to exist to protect the vunerable and innocent, however with a case like this you'd expect the fact that the girl is so close to this important legal age, together with her apparent maturity, to be taken into consideration.
There are no winners from this case. The family are no doubt in quite a state, the teacher is now in prison for the crime of falling in love, and the country is now a little bit poorer for having to pay for the police, court and prison costs involved.
I appreciate the police have to investigate such matters if a complaint is received, but a caution would have been more appropriate in this instance. Those of you thinking that the jailing of this teacher is a good thing should really open your minds a little.

It makes you wonder what the upshot of this is with regard to relations between the ex-pupil and her parents is now? I assume that it was them that proceeded with the prosecution despite their own daughter telling them that she and this woman were or are in love with each other? It sounds like this teacher has more likely been prosecuted because of them not wanting their daughter to be a lesbian.
I wonder if they will still have a problem with Ms Goddard in several years time if their daughter is either still seeing her or is in a loving lesbian relationship? I expect they will blame Ms Goddard for "turning their daughter lesbian" or something equally as ignorant, despite their daughter openly admitting that she was the one pushing for something to happen and consenting to the affair.
Having lived with several lesbians and straight women of whom the vast majority experimented with consensual lesbianism before the age of consent, i just find this story very sad. Yes laws are there to be upheld but these laws seem very ignorant of reality and emotion. However, the laws, whether changed in the future or not, should be the same for men and women, gay or heterosexual.

I imagine this talented classical musician will be given a tough ride by the Bad Girls. Will she have to be segregated as some kind of "nonce"? It all seems so inappropriate. I wouldn't classify her as a pedophile. Note that the judge specifically decided not to make an order forbidding the teacher and pupil from meeting for five years.

So at what age did you lot discover sex? Paedophile?A bit strong i think. This young lady was 15 probably going on 30 as most teenagers are these days. Both knew what they were doing was wrong.Foolishly they should have waited another year. However read what sentences are given to the real nasties out there and i think you will see this was over the top.Still 15 minutes of fame and she has a .stage name already.

Brian Wilts-"paedophiles roam our streets....."
Paedophilia- "the condition of being sexually attracted to children"- Collins English Dictionary.
Brian, this condition is not gender specific; this woman IS a paedophile, but she is one that will not be "roaming our streets" for a while.

paedophiles roam our streets, children beaten in there homes by vicous parents, but this warrants a jail sentance ?, unreal, surely there was some other way of dealing with this?

Excellent! It's about time that a female paedophile was given a custodial sentence.
I'm sure that it would have been twice as long a sentence, at least, had she been a man in similar circumstances.
