Sting's latest hit: love story of Schumann

Sting and his wife Trudie Styler are telling the love story of German composer Robert Schumann and musician Clara Wieck on a fundraising venture to introduce thousands to opera for the first time.

The Police star reads Schumann's letters to Wieck, played by Styler, in film Twin Spirits. The musicians overcame Wieck's father's rejection and married in 1840. But Schumann went mad and died in 1856.

Sir Derek Jacobi narrates on the DVD, released next week to support the Royal Opera House's scheme for 90,000 young people to experience opera, music and dance. Styler said: "I hope it will help evolve opera into a form for everybody."

After this project, the popular public's ignorance of Schumann and Opera will remain secure.
