Indonesians rush to glimpse boy who tops 19lb at birth

25.09.09

Crowds flocked to an Indonesian hospital to glimpse the country's largest recorded baby - a 19.2lb boy born by Caesarean section to a diabetic mother.

The delivery of Akbar Risuddin, or Risuddin the Great in Arabic, in Kisaran, north Sumatra, took 40 minutes. The mother and child, who measured nearly 24inches at birth, were both well.

Risuddin's weight was the result of excessive glucose from his mother during pregnancy.

The heaviest baby recorded in Guinness World Records weighed 23.75lb, but died hours after birth in America in 1879.
